Vedavyasa Gurukulam

Our History

॥ इतिहासः ॥

Vedavyasa Gurukulam, New Delhi stands as a sacred and scholarly initiative inspired by the far-reaching vision of Prāta-Smaraṇīya Sri 1008 Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji, the 32nd pontiff in the illustrious lineage of the Sri Pejavara Matha, which traces its spiritual-paramparā to Sri Adhokshaja Tirtharu, a direct disciple of Śrī Madhvācārya. The institution is rooted in the grand mission of safeguarding and spreading the eternal principles of Tattvavāda (Dvaita Vedānta)—the philosophical system established by Śrī Madhvācārya, revered as the “philosophy of truth.”

Historical Event

Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji’s pioneering contribution to traditional education began in 1956 CE, when he established the renowned Purnaprajna Vidyapitha in Bengaluru. Founded with the dual objectives of preserving India’s ancient culture and propagating the Madhva philosophical tradition, Purnaprajna Vidyapitha grew steadily into a model Gurukula, respected for its disciplined training, rigorous śāstric learning, and the production of outstanding scholars.

With the committed effort of Sri Swamiji, the Vidyapitha came to nurture and support a continuous stream of Dvaita Vedānta scholars and Yājñikas, ensuring that the priceless tradition of Tattvavāda would remain vibrant and uninterrupted. Over the years, the Vidyapitha has guided hundreds of students annually, and in recent times, more than 300 resident students have pursued studies in various śāstras within its living Gurukula environment.

“Building a North-Indian focal point for dharmic learning, philosophical discourse, and global outreach, thereby strengthening national integration through traditional knowledge.”

Recognizing the need to extend this śāstric renaissance beyond the southern heartland of Tattvavāda into the national sphere, Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji embraced a larger challenge—to establish a similar Vidyapitha and a dedicated Research Centre in New Delhi, the capital of India. In alignment with this noble objective, the Delhi Development Authority sanctioned one acre of land, enabling the foundation of this sacred mission.

Carrying forward this historic purpose, Sri Swamiji formally established three institutions on 3rd October 2018, marking a new chapter in the journey of Madhva tradition in North India. Among these, Vedavyasa Gurukulam, New Delhi represents the research and academic wing designed to promote deep scholarship, systematic research, manuscript preservation, and global outreach.

Thus, Vedavyasa Gurukulam is not merely an institute—it is a continuation of an age-old spiritual lineage and a fulfilment of Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji’s lifelong mission.

Today, this divine legacy and monumental task are actively propelled forward by the present pontiff, H.H. Sri Vishwaprasanna Teertha Swamiji. Under his auspicious leadership, the Gurukulam continues to thrive and expand its scholarly horizons.
